Research categories and themes

Categories

There are three main categories of research funded by the Auckland Medical Research Foundation:

1. Clinical

1. Biomedical

1. Population Health and Community

Themes

These three categories can be further broken down into the 15 research themes listed below. Each theme contains a short description, but please note that the description is general and therefore may not encompass all the possible research applicable to that specific area.

1. *Biomedical Imaging*
Neuroimaging, medical-imaging computing, cell and molecular imaging, nuclear medicine, non-neurological medical imaging, pre-clinical imaging.

1. *Cancer*
Basic and applied cancer research including cancer biology, immunology and gene therapy, development of new therapeutic techniques, epidemiology and clinical trials.

1. *Cardiovascular Science*
Basic and applied cardiovascular research including the structure and function of the heart, vascular system and the blood, and the disorders and diseases associated with the cardiovascular system, epidemiology and clinical trials.

1. *Cellular and Molecular Biology*
Basic research including cell biology, cell biochemistry, cell physiology and cell structure, and the processes of gene regulation, genetics and genomics, and the disorders and diseases associated with abnormal cellular and molecular function.

1. *Endocrinology, Metabolism and Nutrition*
Basic and applied research including biology of the endocrine system and the disorders of the endocrine system including metabolic diseases, especially diabetes mellitus, and the effects of nutrition on health.

1. *Infection and Immunity*
Basic and applied research in microbiology, virology and immunology, and for the development of vaccines and therapeutic antibodies.

1. *Musculo-skeletal Science *
Basic and applied research into the structure and function of bones, muscles, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, joints, and other connective tissue, and the disorders and diseases of the musculo-skeletal system including metabolic bone disease and rheumatology.

1. *Neuroscience*
Basic and applied research including cognitive neuroscience, neuropharmacology, neurophysiology, neuropsychiatry, developmental psychology, computational neuroscience, behavioral therapies and neurological/neuropsychiatric genetics.

1. *Population Health*
Research into factors that determine health and disease in human populations, and the testing and measurement of impact of intervention, with the aim of improving the health of an entire population.

1. *Pulmonary, Renal, Nephrology and Gastrointestinal Sciences*
Basic and applied research into the structure and function of internal organs (excluding the heart), and the disorders and diseases associated with abnormal function and organ failure.

1. *Reproduction, Development, Maternal and Newborn Health*
Basic and applied research into women’s health and reproduction, pregnancy, human development and the newborn, including research into human anatomy and genetics, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, paediatric surgery, public Health and primary health care.

1. *Sensory sciences*
Basic and applied research into vision and hearing and the disorders and diseases associated with abnormal function or failure.

1. *Stem Cell Biology*
Basic and applied research into stem cell biology, their function, and their role in normal physiological processes and in response to injury or disease.

1. *Surgery*
Basic and applied research into surgical procedures, including development and optimization of surgical techniques, comparison of surgical procedures and pre-, peri and post-operative care.

1. *Other*
This category comprises research that cannot easily be categorized into one of the 14 themes listed above.
